Why do you have to change your Oil?
Why does Oil need to be changed?
After discussing what regular maintenance your vehicle needs, and the recommended amount of time in between each. We can now dive into the importance of changing your vehicles oil regularly, and what effects it has on your vehicle’s engine. Here at our shop, we call it an L-O-F service, or Lube, Oil, Filter. Changing your vehicle’s oil filter is equally important as changing the oil, in fact you most always do both together, otherwise it defeats the purpose of putting in clean oil. The filter is what collects those dirt particles from entering the engine unit. We have two filter examples we use at our shop. Both do the same job; just depends on what kind your vehicle needs.
There are a lot of components to ensuring you stay on top of your vehicle’s maintenance, oil change ranging to be one of the tops, and most important.
Here are couple top reasons to change the oil and filter in your vehicle:
- Lubricates the engine.
- Keeps engine clean by filtering out particles and sludge. Such particles include dirt.
- Oil breaks down over time and is unable to absorb heat. Eventually this causes the engine to overheat or seize.
- Dirty oil increases fuel consumption
- Longer engine life increasing vehicle longevity.
- Good opportunity to have the entire vehicle inspected and other maintenance services performed.
Neglecting an oil change will result in causing stress and unnecessary wear on your engine, which could cause it to stop running well before its time. Replacing an entire engine is a very costly repair to make as a result of failing to regularly change the oil.
Each vehicle manufacturer has different suggestions on when you should change your oil. At our shop, we typically like to see that you change your oil every 3,000-5,000 miles. The mileage also varies if you drive with synthetic, or full synthetic oil.

In our picture examples you can see the new oil filter versus the old. The sludgy oil leaking off the old filter, the vehicle was due for an oil change. If you see the dark color of the oil, that is another sign it was much needed. Oil is not supposed to be that dark.
